North-west Aussie Rules girls drawing inspiration from local women's team from 1950s

The women who play for Aussie Rules team Mersey Leven Power are being inspired by the future the AFL's new national women's league promises. The Latrobe-based team has also received a boost from the past — a photo, recently unearthed, of a Latrobe women's team that played a game in the 1950s. Little is known about the game, but four members of the Power, a Latrobe-based statewide women's league team, are great grandchildren of women who pulled on the boots in the 1950s. Shannon McLennan, Kaylah Sheehan, Nakiah Sheehan and Georgia Smith are taking on the game in an era when it is no longer seen as just a novelty for women to play footy. In 2017, women's football will have the opportunity to reach a huge new audience, and teams like the Power are already on the radar for national scouts. Continue reading

#BlackLivesMatter Rally held in Melbourne to show solidarity

About 3,500 people gathered in Melbourne on Sunday to show "solidarity" to the Black Lives Matter movement, following a recent outbreak of racial-fueled violence in the United States. Crowds gathered on the stairs of the State Library of Victoria about 12:00pm amid a strong police presence, including the riot squad, but the march was peaceful. Organizers said the march was in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States, which gathered momentum following a number of fatal shootings involving black Americans and police. The death of Alton Sterling in Louisiana andPhilando Castile in Minnesota, both at the hands of officers, triggered a wave of protests over police treatment of minorities. Continue reading
